Sažetak
Approaches to the motivation and meaning of idioms range from those that consider idioms to be completely arbitrary linguistic units to those that view idioms as a linguistic manifestation of conceptual connections, and consider that their meanings are motivated. The theoretical framework of this study is based on The Conventional Figurative Language Theory (CFLT) adopted by Dobrovol'skij and Piirainen (2005), according to which phraseological meaning is realized on two levels − at the level of lexicalized conventionalized figurative meaning that has become established, and at the level of a linguistically relevant trace left on the meaning of the idiom by the image in its background as its semantic residue. The primary conceptual level represents the literal meaning of a particular idiom, while the secondary level represents its figurative meaning. The discrepancy between literal (open) and figurative meaning is expressed by the semantic peculiarity of the phrase, which Burger (2007: 32) calls idiomaticity. They are connected by a image component, a conventional image which, like knowledge of extralinguistic reality, is determined by a conceptual metaphor that has motivated figurative meaning. Idioms created by transforming literal into figurative meaning using figures of antithesis and irony can be singled out as a special group. The idioms of Kajkavian that are the subject of this study were created by such a process. Prior to conducting the study, it was assumed that most of the idioms would refer to man and his traits, and that their meanings would have negative and (slightly) pejorative connotations. It was also assumed that most of the idioms confirmed in the sources used would belong to comparative idioms. Phraseological material used in the analysis was collected from publications in Kajkavian and the author’s own field research. Idioms are analysed semantically, and a review of their other representative aspects is given. This study and analysis aim to contribute to the body of research on Kajkavian dialectal phraseology, but also phraseology in general, especially in the field of research on the motivation of phraseological meaning.
