Sažetak
The study examines the use of rhetorical devices and performative verbs in two motivational speeches delivered by presidential candidates Zoran Milanović and Kolinda Grabar Kitarović during the 2019 pre-election campaign. They represent discourse fragments with similar purpose and specific goals: to address and convince the oublic of the proposed programs before election. An outline of the problem and the benefits of change should be provided, requiring the elements of conviction, direction, intensity and persistance from the speaker in their efforts to persuade the listener to make the change. Politics is about convincing potential voters that change will improve the state of the nation. Tha analysis starts from two hypothese: (1) the speakers use rhetorical devices such as rhetorical questions, parallelism, analogy and hyperbole to achieve the required elements and (2) the speakers'use of performative verbs and their pragmatic function reveal the type of underlying power and ideology within each speech act. Forty sentences and twelve slogans were selected and analyzed for the use of rhetorical devices and performative verbs. The findings show that both speakers make use of analogy, comparing contemporary situation to an event from the past clarifying the chosen date of the speech, successive words, phrases and clauses with the same or similar grammatical structure, especially in slogans, where key words and phrases are repeated to appear more memorable or to make the underlying ideology seem more 'common sense', and hyperbole, used to help the audience clearly understand the intended point of view. Differences are observed in the use of rhetorical questions, which are prevalent in Milanović's motivational speech. He also relied on sentences with asserted acts since assertives have a truth value that can enhance the effect of the asserted proposition. His opponent relied on both assertive and expressive speech acts and their combinations, revealing personal conviction and faith. It is evident in both speeches that more than one category can be applied to a single speech act.
