Football has an extraordinary impact on this complex notion of collective identity which is determined by territory, shared myths and historical memories, culture, economy, history, tradition, rituals, origins and potential future. National identity is an indispensable part of every individual's everyday life. It is football that acts as a mechanism of national solidarity, promoting a sense of identity and community. Political conflicts and patriotism were often emphasized through the matches, which led to conflicts with other countries, and thus to the formation of an identity that results in rivalry, since, through football, spontaneously, but explicitly, differentiation from others and opposition to others is emphasized. Football, especially in these areas, is compared to wars, and as is evident from the data presented in this paper, one football match is also considered the beginning of the Croatian War of Independence. Due to the fact that football is considered something much bigger than sport, i.e. a way of life, it is increasingly used to recognize the identity of the country and create a permanent image based on permanent symbols such as jerseys, coats of arms, anthems and the colors of the national flag. During the period of independence and the creation of a national state, the Croatian nation yearned for its own symbols of identity, and it was during this period that the Croatian national football team began to achieve significant successes that caused euphoria around the world, and after winning medals at the World Cup by the Croatian national football team , such a small country became famous all over the world. It is for this reason that football, in the territory of the Republic of Croatia, is considered an important part of both collective and national symbolism. It is undeniable that Croatia is a great sports nation, and this is supported by the great sports successes of Croatian athletes on the international sports scene. From the beginning of the creation of the Republic of Croatia, the performances of the national football team were a sign of national identification and recognition of the Republic of Croatia. Undoubtedly, this is about raising national identity and creating a kind of image of the state as a sports power. The connection between football and national identity is inevitable, and football itself is considered the greatest ambassador of the Republic of Croatia and Croatian national identity.
