Sažetak
Right to self-determination, being one of the foremost rights of the peoples in the post-World War II system of international law and international relations needs rethinking in the age when sea level rise and climate change are a serious threat to existence of small island nations. Therefore, this article will first look into the traditional definitions of self- determination, formulated in the context where climate change and sea level rise were not a seriously considered issue. Next, it will give an overview of challenges that small island states and their newly relocated populations might face in a struggle to preserve their identity and independence. Finally, it will examine some possible consequences of this process, ranging from agreements with states that could provide shelter for relocated population to recognizing deterritorialized states as subjects of international law.
