Sažetak
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion have earned J. R. R. Tolkien a place in the twentieth-century literary canon and have resurged the fantasy genre in the popular culture. As a medievalist and an Oxford don, Tolkien was a genuine expert in Old English literature, but has also proven to be a specialist in Anglo-Saxon culture in general. Music is one of the most vital parts of that culture and Tolkien showed his awareness of medieval music in its multi-layered treatment in his Middle-earth novels and stories. Music is the key element in the creation of his imaginary world in Ainulindalë ; its dissonance drives the Arda’s history forward, the voices and instruments of its inhabitants reflect individual personalities and showcase the art of Middle-earth races, as exemplified by this thesis in the analysis of the Dwarves music at the beginning of The Hobbit, Bilbo’s “The Road Goes Ever On” which connects this novel and the following trilogy, and the poems and language of the Ents, found in Chapter “Treebeard”. The phonaesthetics guided Tolkien to invent his original languages based on the beauty of their sound and the poems in his canon serve as a way for characters to express their deepest feelings and to reach higher truths. This rich and complex legendarium is almost crafted on music, be it its (sub)creative potential, the echoing of the scop tradition of myth-preserving and hero-making or marrying the melody and harmony with words into poetry. The Song of Middle-earth tells a mythopoeic story abundant with musical motifs, and its author composed one of the most loved books of today. This thesis’ goal was to examine some of the ways in which music was presented and used in Tolkien’s works, and how it helped tie his great narrative together.
