Sažetak
The maize inbred line Bc 10 developed from domestic variety Beljski zuban is known as a source of resistance for leaf and stalk anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum graminicola (Ces.) Wils. In the first trial in 1994, four lines, sources of resistance to stalk anthracnose (Bc 10, LB 31, SP 288, and ZP 4) were compared for resistance to stalk anthracnose and grain yield in hybrid combinations following the line x tester design. Based on general combining ability (GCA) Bc 10 was inferior in resistance to SP 288 for number of infected internodes, but it was superior to SP 288 and LB 31 for outer stalk discoloration. Bc 10 also exhibited acceptable combining ability for grain yield, harvest grain moisture and resistance to fusarium stalk rot and was thus used for incorporating resistance into six susceptible maize lines. Under conditions of artificial inoculation pedigree selection with two backcrosses was used. In the second trial in 2001, newly developed and original lines were compared for resistance under conditions of artificial stalk inoculation with C. graminicola. All six newly developed lines were significantly more resistant to stalk anthracnose than original lines. Improvement of resistance in early inbreds was evident by decreased stalk breakage percentage. Test crosses with original and newly developed lines were compared in a series of field trials in 1999. Test crosses with lines Bc 10252 and Bc 102 were significantly more resistant and gave higher yields than the original hybrids with lines Bc 252 and F 2. For other lines no appreciably improved combinations were obtained. Artificial inoculation with C. graminicola is recommended in maize breeding. The line Bc 10 provides a good source of resistance to stalk anthracnose.
