Sažetak
It is well known that the best way of learning is learning by doing, or more precisely, learning through reflection on doing. In our attempts to teach children about the invisible world of microbes and the crucial role they play in our daily lives, we encounter many obstacles to conducting real experimental settings. However, well-designed experiential learning activities (1) that use readily available, inexpensive, and noninfectious materials can greatly enhance the learning of microbiology topics in school classrooms or in less formal activities such as science popularization. Experiental learning activities can be used with equal efficiency in teaching abstract topics such as microbial evolution or topics related to infectious diseases and their prevention, as well as in teaching more experimental-friendly topics related to environmental microbiology and biotechnology. Because the emphasis is on "learning by doing" no prior scientific knowledge is required to conduct these activities, making them suitable for a wide audience of all ages. In addition to learning microbiology, these activities give participants a good idea of what an experiment is and how to design one, and are therefore useful for learning science in general. In two courses (Experiental Learning of microbiology and Service Learning in Biology) offered in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, biology students have the opportunity to learn about these fantastic approaches and try their hand at preparing and running microbiology workshops for different audiences or applying their knowledge from the academic biology curriculum in the community after defining a social problem for which they want to find solutions. Student feedback is great because the benefits to their personal development are greater than in traditional academic classes.
