Sažetak
Slavonian traditional culture is rich with customs that celebrate water. Some such customs are: ornating wells on Palm Sunday, washing one's face in water full of flowers also on Palm Sunday and dodole. Along that important role of water in the customs through the year, water was also important in the rites of passage. It is obligatory in wedding customs and funerals, but in the form of holy water. Each household had supplies of holy water in the past. They would acquire it from their parish after it was blessed the day before the Epiphany (Janury 6th). Holy Water was used a medicine and for protection. However, there were certain dangers connected to water and certain bans applied to it. It was a common belief that fairies dwell by creeks and streams, and they could potentially harm people. It was therefore necessary to be cautious in such places – water surfaces in uninhabited areas. If we take into consideration that many traditional vetos had a preventive nature, these could have been eastablished due to constant threat of malaria in the past. Despite of that, there are forrest springs in Slavonia that are believed to have healing power. There is a quite well-known catholic place of worship in Ilača. There are several springs in the area around Slavonski Brod, such as Gašinac, Grabovac, Prdljevac, Vinkovac, sv. Petka, and a well of St. Magdalene's in Jaruge. The best known orthodox place of worship connected to water is the Church of St. Paraskeva (Petka) at Dobra voda (meaning - good water) in Vukovar, often visited by non-orthodox people too.
