Sažetak
Due to global population growth and urbanisation, the generation and disposal of biowaste pose a significant environmental issue. As part of daily human activities, the production of biowaste is inevitable. Biowaste is a waste stream that should be included in the circular economy so that the value of this waste material can be recovered. Current waste management strategies include measures to prevent biowaste, collect it and recover its value in order to achieve economic and environmental benefits. Biowaste contains complex organic compounds such as proteins, fats, lignin, and cellulose as well as new pollutants such as pesticides. The potential of biowaste lies in the biodegradability of the organic waste fraction. Considering this potential, biological processes can be used to treat biowaste. Depending on the type of treatment process, biowaste can be converted into valuable soil-improving material through composting or into a renewable energy source, namely biogas, through anaerobic digestion. Microorganisms are an essential component of biological processes in which they catalyse biological degradation reactions through enzymes. Microorganisms that can adapt to different process conditions can significantly improve the biological process. In this study, isolation of efficient microbial strains from biowaste was performed. Microbiological techniques were used to isolate and purify the most dominant microbial colonies. Morphological, physiological and biochemical analyses were performed to characterise the isolates. The results showed that all microbial groups, fungi and bacteria, were present in the biowaste, with dominant bacterial presence.
