Sažetak
Cosmetic users are showing a strong preference for products derived from plant extracts and other natural sources, as they consider them to be environmentally friendly, safe, and capable of positively affecting the health and appearance of human skin. Therefore, the interest in natural cosmetic formulations has increased in the last years and the production, development of natural cosmetics is one of the fastest-growing industries [1]. Immortelle, Helichrysum italicum (Asteraceae), is a flowering plant widely used for its medicinal properties and more recently also as ingredient in natural cosmetics formulations. Plants are the primary recipient of elements from the environment (soil, water, air) that are transferred via roots and foliage. Therefore, multielemental characterization of plants and their products is of great importance to assess their quality and evaluate the potential risk-benefit ratio of their consumption in cosmetic products. In the present contribution, the potential of total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF) for multielement analysis of raw Immortelle samples and different derived cosmetic preparations (i.e, macerates, creams, hydrolates and distillates) was evaluated. For that purpose different sample preparations approaches were tested and compared with the results obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Simple and sustainable sample treatment methods, which are more in line with the green analytical chemistry principles, were considered, including for instance the use of suspension preparation of the powdered material in the case of Immortelle sample analysis. In a previous publication we demonstrated the usefulness of this procedure for multielemental analysis of vegetal foodstuff [2]. Moreover, in an attempt to identify possible sources of influence and specific elemental profiles in the studied plant, soil samples where Immortelle specimens were grown were also analyzed.
