Sažetak
Aim: To discuss whether indication for orthognathic surgery is pure aesthetic or functional. Materials and methods: In the study are included patients operated at the Department for Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Dubrava, Zagreb in the period of 2017 til 2022. Also the technique of preoperative planning was assesed. Results: There were 240 patients operated at the Department for Maxillofacial Surgery in the last five years because of various jaw deformities. In 90% of cases the indication for the surgery was a correction of the occlusion, mandibular prognathism and class III occlusion being the most prevalent case for the surgery. Also in 90% of the cases orthodontic preoperative treatment was conducted and prepared the patient and its occlusion for the orthognathic surgery. Other cases included vertical excess of the maxilla and mandibular retrognathism. Also in 85% of cases bimaxillary surgery was performed. In the last two years preoperative planning for surgery dramaticaly has changed. In this period all the patients are being planned completely by virtual surgical planning (VSP) utilising special software, CT scans and scanned dental models. Conclusion: The main indication for orthognathic surgery remains to be correction of the occlusion. Moving of the jaws in various directions improves also the aesthetic appearance of the patient. With VSP the aesthetic appearance of the patient dramatically improved because planning of the jaw movements can now be more precise and predicatble.
