Sažetak
Hrvatski filolog i akademik, svećenik i kanonik Ivan Berčić (Brčić) (Zadar, 9. I. 1824. – Zadar, 24. V. 1870.) zadužio je svojim znanstveno- stručnim opusom hrvatsku filologiju, historiografiju i kulturnu povijest. Njegovo djelovanje obilježeno je s jedne strane skupljanjem rasute glagoljske baštine, a s druge njezinom prezentacijom i vrjednovanjem sukladno filološkim dostignućima svoga vremena. Stoga Berčić zauzima – u najširem smislu rečeno – važno mjesto u povijesti hrvatskog glagoljaštva. Godine 1855. postavljen je za profesora staroslavenskog jezika, hrvatskog jezika i staroslavenske liturgike, a 1865. za profesora Starog zavjeta i istočnih jezika na Visokoj bogoslovnoj školi u Centralnom bogoslovskom sjemeništu dalmatinskih biskupija u Zadru. Ivan Berčić za svoga kratkog života zaslužio je i veliko priznanje kada je 1867. izabran za pravog člana Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti u Zagrebu s pravom na titulu akademik. Bio je član odbora za uređivanje i priređivanje liturgijskih knjiga (1868. – 1870.) sa zadatkom objavljivanja novog glagoljskog misala. Njegova je dragocjena ostavština (glagoljski rukopisi i fragmenti, tiskane knjige, Misal po zakonu Rimskog dvora iz 1483., izdanja senjske glagoljske tiskare, riječke tiskare Šimuna Kožičića Benje i dr.) danas na Odjelu rukopisa i rijetkih knjiga Ruske nacionalne knjižnice u Sankt Peterburgu, a pojedini glagoljski spomenici koje je pronašao ili su mu bili dostavljeni u Arhivu HAZU u Zagrebu te personalni i drugi spisi u arhivu/knjižnici Samostana sv. Marije na Glavotoku i Znanstvenoj knjižnici u Zadru, dok se tek manji dio građe o njemu nalazi u Arhivu Zadarske nadbiskupije u Zadru, Državnom arhivu u Zadru i Arhivu Šibenske biskupije u Šibeniku. U ovom se radu naglasak stavlja na pozicioniranje Berčića u okvirima moderne hrvatske historiografije i filologije „dugog“ 19. stoljeća te na ocjenu radova koji govore o njemu unutar hrvatske suvremene historiografije, filologije i književne historiografije.

The eminent Croatian philologist and academician,
priest and canon Ivan Berčić (Brčić) (Zadar, 9
January 1824 – Zadar, 24 May 1870) entrusted
Croatian philology and history with his scientific
and professional oeuvre. In 1855, he was appointed
professor of the Old Slavic language, Croatian
language and Old Slavic liturgy, and in 1865, he
was appointed professor of the Old Testament and
Eastern languages at the Higher Theological School
in the Central Theological Seminary of the
Dalmatian Diocese in Zadar. In his short life,
Ivan Berčić earned great recognition when he was
elected a full member of the Yugoslav Academy
of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb in 1867 with the
right to the title of academician. He was
a member of the committee for editing and
preparing liturgical books (1868 - 1870) with
the task of publishing a new Glagolitic missal.
His activity was characterized on the one
hand by the collection of scattered Glagolitic
heritage, and on the other by its presentation
and evaluation in accordance with the philological
achievements of his time. Therefore,
Berčić plays an important role in the history of
Croatian Glagolitic script. In this regard,
it is sufficient to refer to two evaluations of
his work by his contemporaries: “Priest Ivan
Bèrčić is a real priest of unabashed behaviour,
and a man who is not able to get involved in
any politics, but despite all this, he cannot hide
his ardent love for his nationality and his
national language. For thirteen years already, he
has been teaching the Glagolitic script to
the spiritual youth at the local central Seminary
...” (1862), that is, also “The national spirit,
which was transmitted in 1848, also left its mark
in the field of national liturgy. It had a
germ left in the careful teaching of Old Slavic at
the Zadar Seminary, and that germ was
revived by our tireless priest Ivan Berčić, who
completed his studies in linguistics in Vienna
under the renowned Miklošić. (...) We hope that
his efforts will contribute substantially
to this, that the new Slavic church books will be
consolidated and restored, so it will be a
great pride for all our folk in Dalmatia, that he
has preserved his national treasure in his
lap. Once the books are repaired, reprinted and
complete, then we hope that the spirit of
the people will have already taken hold and
occupied all the orthodox hearts, that there
will be no bold opponent who would prevent him
from raising his national voice towards
heaven, to give God his thanks, that we are still
alive, that we are not consumed behind the
eternal struggle!” (1867). It is his precious
legacy (Glagolitic manuscripts and fragments,
printed books, Misal po zakonu Rimskoga dvora
[Missal by the Law of the Roman Court] from
1483, editions of the Senj Glagolitic printing
house, the printing house of Šimun Kožičić
Benja in Rijeka and others.) today in the
Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books of
the National Library in Russia in Saint
Petersburg, and some Glagolitic monuments that
he found or were delivered to him in the Croatian
Academy of Sciences and Arts Archive in
Zagreb (and personal and other files in the
archive/library of the Monastery of Saint Mary
in Glavotok, the Research Library of Zadar, while
some material about him can be found in
the Archdiocese Archives in Zadar, the State
Archives in Zadar and the Diocese Archives in
Šibenik. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the
positioning of Berčić within the framework of
modern Croatian historiography, philology and
literary historiography of the “long” 19th
century, and on the evaluation of works concerning
him within Croatian contemporary historiography,
philology and literary historiography. This
primarily refers to the writings of V. Jagić, I.
Milčetić, J. Kalaj, V. Uranija, V. Štefanić, A. M.
Strgačić, V. Jakić-Cestarić, J. L. Tandarić, S.
Antoljak, D. Deković and others, and especially to
A. Nazor, but equally to the effort and commitment
of the Russian Slavic scholar and historian
Svetlana O. Vialova, who simultaneously
participated in both Russian and Croatian
philology and historical science and was an
important link between Berčić legacies in Russia
and paleo-Slavic scholars, Slavic scholars,
Croatists and historians in Croatia.
