Sažetak
This paper deals with the notion of "kalokagathia" and its transformations through the culture of ancient Greece. The origin of the term is traced back to Herodotus' writing, "The Histories", where it was used to represent the aristocratic ideal of a “perfect gentleman”. With the emergence of Socrates, this term receives a whole new dimension and is transformed into an ideal of a virtuous character. This idea is further refined in Plato’s philosophy, where it becomes an educational model based on ethical and aesthetic principles. Thus, this concept becomes the cultural and educational ideal of classical Greece. Although Aristotle’s philosophy is often referred to as a starting point for the understanding of the notion of kalokagathia, the paper emphasises the role of Plato’s philosophy in the full realisation of this cultural and educational ideal, claiming that Aristotle’s construal of kalokagathia is essentially Platonic. This ideal of a perfect citizen, formed by the educational system to adopt a refined lifestyle and a virtuous stature, was indeed transferred to Aristotle’s practical philosophy and also had its place in modern European humanism.
