Sažetak
This paper examines whether plastic art, specifically sculpture, has the required properties to be a relevant methodological resource in the process of education as conceived by Plato. The starting hypothesis of this paper is that an ambivalent interpretation of art is present in Plato. In the dialogues, we can differentiate between desirable and undesirable art, "good" and "bad" mimesis. It is possible to differentiate various degrees or “kinds” of mimesis with regards to the object that is imitated. These degrees correspond to the various degrees of cognition, what can be seen in the Analogy of the divided line. A work of art created as a product of “good mimesis” has its educational quality. Exposure to a perfectly composed work of art has a positive effect on the soul or mind of the observer. The reception of such a work contributes to the understanding of virtues and ideal values which is why mimetic art is an indispensable medium in the platonic practice of education/paideia.
