Sažetak
This paper discusses Hegel’s evaluation and Plato’s judgement of classical Greek art. An analysis of Plato’s dialogues shows two main aspects of Plato’s judgement of art: a negativist criticism of mimetic art which considers poetry as an inadequate form of knowledge, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, a heuretic and poietic understanding of art, according to which poetry has both a legitimate formative function within the system of education and a valuable cognitive function within the concept of episteme. The arguments on which such an interpretation of Plato’s ambivalent attitude towards art is based may be found particularly in the following dialogues: the Republic, Philebus, the Laws and Timaeus. Historically, this positive aspect of art is embodied in the idealistic character of High Classical Greek sculpture, as evidenced by the Doryphoros of Polykleitos.
