Sažetak
In this paper, Propertius’ poem recounting Hercules’ taking of the waters of Bona Dea by force is examined and placed within the context of the Indo-European fire in water mytheme. The most salient elements of the reconstructed mytheme are discussed in the paper in relation to Propertius’ poem IV, 9, namely: fire, water, horses, gender and the channeling of energy through sexual means ; also discussed is the insinuation of human sacrifice in the founding of the Herculis Invicti Ara Maxima. Special attention is paid to the role of gender in the poem, and its consequences for the reconstruction of the mytheme.
