Extraction of the ruthenium(III) thiocyanate complex with tetraphenylarsonium (TPA) chloride and cetyltrimethylammonium (CTMA) bromide in chloroform is investi-gated.The extracted complex has a maximum absorbance at 574 nm. As ruthe-nium(III) forms the extractable thiocyanate complex quantitatively only on heating, the effect of temperature and heating time on the formation of the thiocyanate complex is determined by heating time on the formation of the thiocyanate complex is determined by heating the aqueous phase before extraction. The optimum heating time is 45 min-utes at 850 C. The optimal pH of the aqueous phase before heating is 1.75-2.75. The presence of sufractants can influence complex formtion. Therefore, extraction of the ruthenium(III) thiocyanate complex is carried out also in the presence of some sufrac-tants in the aqueous phase. These results are compared with results of ruthenium ex-traction without the presence of sufractants and new extration-spectrophotometric methods for the separation and determination of ruthenium with and without the pres-ence of sufractants are described.
