Sažetak
In recent years globalisation processes have, on the one hand, largely contributed to the spread of English, in its prestigious role of global lingua franca. On the other hand, they have favoured the constant discovery of new forms of mediated communication, leading to a significant variability and complexity of language usage. The impact of English on other languages has primarily been studied in terms of lexical borrowing, with particular attention being paid to the degree of adaptation of new English loanwords at various linguistic levels (orthographic, phonological, morphological, semantic). However, given the pervasive presence of English in global media, and taking, additionally, into account the exponential growth of the number of non-native speakers of English worldwide, it becomes clear why the use of English in written and mass-mediated discourse is not limited to fully integrated lexical borrowings, but goes beyond to include various instances of written code-switching (from nonce borrowings, fixed expressions, formulaic phrases, up to whole sentences), involving different purposes and discourse functions. In light of the above, the aim of the present paper is, thus, to analyse in greater detail the extent of the influence of English on Russian and Croatian in electronic written media and in computer-mediated communication.
