Sažetak
The goal of the paper is to examine how Hong Taeyong positioned himself in terms of the identities he used, resisted or achieved through his interactions with the Han interlocutors and what roles identities related to Chosŏn, chunghwa 中華 and sŏnbi played in the process. I show how Hong employed his personal attributes and sŏnbi attainments, as well as his representations of Chosŏn to first reinforce a common chunghwa identity and then achieve recognition on the most personal level. By doing so, identity issues relevant for 18th-century Chosŏn are brought in a closer connection to a concrete individual, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of Hong Taeyong than the current scholarship allows, and offering another way of reading of both the meaning of Hong's journey to Qing, as well as of the records that remain of it.
