This paper examines how Chosŏn was represented in Hong Taeyong's encounters with Qing subjects during his journey to Qing in 1765, as they were recorded in his two Yŏnhaengnok travelogues - Tamhŏn Yŏn'gi and Ŭlbyŏngyŏnhaengnok. 18th century was a period of intense debates among Chosŏn scholars and officials about Chosŏn's identity and role in the civilisational order that underwent profound changes when the Qing ousted the Ming. For the most part, these debates remained in a realm of theory, were intended for domestic audiences and didn't engage with other concerned actors directly. It is, however, direct contact with the Other that ultimately puts the claims of these debates to the test, as issues pertaining to identity and (Self)-representation are most urgently formed and expressed in immediate relation and reaction to the Other. Hong Taeyong's travelogues abound in descriptions of encounters and retellings of direct communication between him and Qing subjects. Hong's encounters took place in relatively informal settings and between individuals who were not necessarily speaking on behalf of their respective courts, and are thus valuable for the exploration of how a Chosŏn literati understood, communicated and ultimately negotiated his Chosŏn identity. By examining both how Hong represented Chosŏn in his direct communication with the Other (via interpreters, brushtalks, poems and letters), and how this communication was framed within the rest of his travelogue narrative aimed at Chosŏn readers, a hypothesis is formed that these two representations are not always overlapping and that each served a different function.
