Sažetak
Following almost five centuries of development in maritime charts depicting the Adriatic Sea, the important geographical feature linking central and parts of western Europe with the central and eastern Mediterranean, in the early 19th century, a systematic, comprehensive hydrographic survey was published, representing the first modern maritime charts of the Adriatic, printed as part of the Carta di cabottaggio del Mare Adriatico edition. The aim of this research was to establish the crucial significant of the edition in the development of Adriatic maritime cartography, given the quality and quantity of the hydrographic and geographic features depicted. To this end, about 50 maritime charts depicting the Adriatic, dating from the late 13th to early 19th century, were researched. A comparative analysis of old maritime charts was carried out, identifying and analysing the infrastructure of the relevant spatial dana. Through research, it was established that, up to the beginning of the 19th century, the process of gathering, processing and depicting geographical data on Adriatic maritime charts remained unsystematic and non-institutional, so that maritime charts could not be consulted as trustworthy, reliable sources of various kinds of information used by seafarers and others for whom spatial relations in coastal, island and maritime areas were of prevailing importance. This crucial edition greatly improved the situation, including the Adriatic in modern cartographic presentation, to the general good. Following the innovation achieved by the production of the first portulano charts in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, and after the production of the first cartographic units including detailed depictions of the coastline and islands (isolarii) in the 15th and 16th centuries, the 17th and 18th -century maritime charts of the Adriatic tended to be reproduced on the basis of uncritical compilations of mostly outdated geographical content, presented in poorly posited mathematical configurations. Given the lack of high quality maritime charts, upon which the quality of navigation depended, among other things, the short-lived French administration in Italy, Slovenia and most of modern-day Croatia organised the first, scientifically based hydrographic survey, led by Ch. F. Beautemps-Beaupré, which was carried out between 1806 and 1809. Due to the contemporary inauspicious political and economic environment of the time, the survey remained unfinished. When the greater part of the northern and northeastern Adriatic came under the Austrian Empire in 1815, the hydrographic survey begun by Beautemps-Beaupré was resumed. After all the survey results had been processed, the maritime atlas Carta di cabottagio del Mare Adriatico disegnata ed incisa sotto la direzione dell' I. R. Stato Maggiore was published between 1822 and 1824 in Milan. The maritime atlas included a collection of 20 charts (on a scale of 1:175, 000). Given the detail and quality of the depiction of all the relevant hydrographic and geographic information and accompanying instructions for seafarers, the publication represented a real turning point in the development of Adriatic maritime charts. In fact, this was the first time that seafarers had been provided with high quality charts on the basis of which they could implement various navigational tasks, and this to a great extent improved the safety of sailing in the Adriatic.
