Sažetak
Prefabricated reinforced brick beams (commonly referred as monta) were a very frequent type of floor structure in residential buildings, where spans are up to 5, 0 m. In this paper we will present an improvement of this system (or to be more precise – change of the structural system) which has been developed in order to use monta to span larger distances so it could be applied to cover industrial facilities. This type of roofing system was developed in Italy in the 1930s, but it was introduced in Croatia only after World War II. Prefabricated curved beams made of reinforced brick are assembled to form a barrel vault, while the horizontal thrust of the vault is supported by regularly spaced steel tie-bars anchored into the longitudinal edge beams. The advantages of this system are: (1) no formwork required, (2) simple temporary scaffolding, (3) easy on-site installation, (4) prefabricated construction (i.e. faster construction), (5) economy (low material consumption) - especially important after the war when there was a shortage. As a case study, an industrial hall built in Hum na Sutli with a 20 m vault span (22 cm thick) will be presented.
