The disturbing thing about the Handke controversy is not so much its multiple occasions, which come at the expense of a dazzling personality and his unique idiosyncrasies. What is actually disturbing is the ongoing polarisation around a highly personal offer of interpretation that entered the public scene as a media-critical admission, but in the meantime concerns war conflicts that have long since been dealt with and comprehensively documented crimes of the 1990s, as well as textual and discourse-analytical facts that have long since been illuminated. How can we explain the widely varying tolerance levels for such drastic taboo-breaking in the public sphere, how can we explain the continued different weighting of these taboo-breaking acts? And how is the continued aesthetic containment and interpretative transfiguration of Handke's texts on the Yugoslavian question by well-meaning interpreters motivated? Only the discussion on a meta-level, the second-order observation, opens up relevant questions in this case, which earns it the attribute of a significant controversy.
