Sažetak
The acquisition of case morphology is a complex process in deaf persons, especially in languages with rich morphology. Due to the complexity of the case system in Croatian, as well as the incompleteness of linguistic input that deaf children are exposed to (they cannot hear morphemes properly), mastering morphological skills is a real challenge for them. Recent studies have shown that morphological skills can be improved in deaf persons through systematic grammar instruction. In terms of developing such a systematic approach to teaching, the methodology of teaching a second/foreign language can provide a useful framework. However, the application of these principles and procedures has so far been limited mainly to bilingual programmes in the education of deaf persons. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the experimental programme of explicit teaching of the Croatian case morphological system to a deaf student. We predicted that the explicit teaching of the Croatian case morphological system would lead to significant progress in the participant’s language skills. The participant was a 29-year-old prelingually deaf male speaker from a hearing family who was orally educated in a regular primary and secondary school, who holds a Master's degree, and was extremely motivated to improve his language skills. The participant was receiving instructions in the Croatian morphological case system in two-hour sessions, several times a month for a year and a half based on the principles and content of teaching Croatian as an L2. The instructions included explanations of the inflection rules for nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and numbers, as well as many relevant examples of how to apply these rules in written sentences and discourse context. After 1.5 years of explicit teaching, we analysed the participant’s responses in tasks that he had not solved correctly at the beginning of the programme. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of participant's responses at two-time points was conducted: the percentage of (in)correct responses and the types of morphosyntactic errors. The differences in the percentage of correct responses between the first and second-time points were statistically analysed using McNemar’s test. The results showed significant progress in mastery of case morphology (χ2 (1) = 137.32, p < .001), with 32% correct responses in the first time point and 82% correct responses in the second time point. As for the errors, the most frequent are substitutions of case endings. Case endings are most often substituted when the preposition can be used in two cases (e.g., na ‘on' is used in both ACC. and LOC.). This means that prepositions serve as a strong cue in the declension of nouns. Number errors include the substitution of SG. for PL., the omission of affixes in the long PL. and PL. tantum. Gender errors mostly result from the substitution of MASC. or NEUT. for FEM. On the other hand, agreement errors were very low, i.e. despite the incorrect declension of a noun, an adjective or pronoun preceding the noun is grammatically correct. The explicit teaching of the Croatian morphological case system to a deaf student can lead to significant progress in his/her morphological skills. However, certain aspects of case morphology can be particularly difficult to master.
