Sažetak
Starting from the current state of the relationship between politics and ethics in postmodern and post-industrial societies, the relationship of politics and ethics through history (from antiquity to modern times) is presented. After covering the division of politics and ethics, the principle of the common good is dealt with in the context of the divide between politics and ethics. The meaning of the principle of the common good is shown, as well as examples of its exclusion from public discourse. The last part deals with the perspective of the Church's social doctrine on the common good in the context of the divide of ethics and politics. The importance of the common good for politics based on the principles of democracy is addressed, using the example of the "Pacem in terris" social encyclical (1963) by Pope John XXIII. The argumentation of the encyclical is presented, stating “that the common good is best safeguarded when personal rights and duties are guaranteed” (PT, 60), as well as the position of the social doctrine of the Church that “human rights contain the main moral and legal requirements that must preside over the shaping of a political community” (Compendium SDC, 388).
