Sažetak
This final paper analyses the status of English in colonial and postcolonial contexts and it is divided into six chapters. It contains the explanations and the definitions of the concepts of colonialism and postcolonialism. Furthermore, it provides a general overview of the status of English during colonialism and postcolonialsm. It contains brief information regarding the circumstances of the spread of English and its varieties, the explanation of English-based pidgins, creoles and indigenized varieties, the role of English in mass media, anti-English reactions, English in relation to technology, English within the Commonwealth and the role of English as a threat to language extinction. The following chapters aim to explain the development and the status of English in individual countries: India, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and South Africa. Finally, the paper provides a conclusion with the comparison of the status of the English language in the previously identified countries.
