Sažetak
Traditional, old varieties are an important resource for preserving genetic biodiversity, mitigating the negative effects of climate change, and consequently increasing the sustainability of agriculture in a given area. A prerequisite for their successful use for the above purposes is a good knowledge of the current situation. In the area of the Žumberak -Samoborsko gorje Nature Park, which is also a Natura 2000 protected area, an ethnobotanical survey of plant taxa and their traditional varieties was conducted in 2021. In the survey participated 30 respondents from 17 settlements in the town of Samobor, with an average age of 57 years. The use of 85 taxa of cultivated fruit, vegetable and cereal varieties and 31 wild plants was documented. The cultivated plants are grown in fenced gardens and orchards, and according to the percentage of respondents who named them, the most common taxa are: grape vine (100%), apple (80%), plum (73%), potato and corn (67% each), pear (63%), carrot (57%), onion and lettuce (50% each), and beans (47%). Among wild plants, nettle (33%) and rose hip (23%) are the most commonly used. 16 grape varieties were recorded, 3 of which are traditional: 'Šipelj', 'Izabela' and 'Žametovka'. The three old apple varieties are 'Kanada', 'Božićnica' and 'Petrovka'. One old variety is known for plum ('Bistrica'), pear ('Tepka') and bean ('Kifl'). Most of the plants are used as food, and the fruits are also used for the production of vinegar, juices, alcoholic beverages (brandy and liqueur) and jams. The main objectives of this research are to document the local ecological knowledge, increase interest in traditional varieties, and to increase ecological awareness among the inhabitants of protected areas. From an economic and environmental perspective, further research is needed to evaluate the environmental and market acceptability of these varieties compared to commercial varieties. The potential for commercialization certainly requires additional research on the interest in production and consumption of these varieties.
