Sažetak
This chapter examines how Media and social networks played a crucial role in the embrace of Western-European xenophobic discourse, especially in the period between August 2015 and March 2016, which saw a significant influx of refugees into Croatia and the closing of borders—a period referred to as “the refugee crisis.” This chapter points to the origin of the imaginary identification with the West and simultaneous marking of Western Europe as the fundamental symbolic Other as well as the attendant socio-economic processes that facilitated such a position. The emergence of typical Western xenophobia in Croatia happened in the context of negative socioeconomic results of the post-socialist EU periphery. Croatia has seen a rise in unemployment and precarious jobs, a decrease in the minimum wage and a significant emigration of the working population, affecting the balance between working people and retirees.
