Sažetak
The experience of Vera Erlich (1897–1980), a sociologist, anthropologist, educational leader, feminist, as well as a progressive Jewish intellectual in post-WWII Yugoslavia, provides a telling example of how an extraordinary individual tried to come to terms with the false egalitarianism of Yugoslav gender relations, as well as closed academic society to which she returned from the US in the 1960s. Heiress to one of the most influential Jewish families of Zagreb Vera Erlich came of age in the aftermath of WWI, at the time of crumbling patriarchal mores in an otherwise fragmented political culture of interwar Yugoslavia. She emigrated to the US, where she published a book based on her life-long research on the changes in the family structure in the South Slavic village. The paper reveals not only Vera Erlich’s complex experiences as a Holocaust survivor in Communist Yugoslavia but also her intellectual grasp of issues of exile, repatriation and nostalgia. Special attention is awarded to Erlich’s account of the American way of life, which she described in a book that was never published. The paper relies on existing literature on the topic as well as available primary sources, including Erlich’s own writings and memoirs.
