Sažetak
Flax/wool, 33/66 and flax/polyester, 33/66 blend yarns were spun from short staple flax which was extracted from stand-retted crops using a novel, high throughput decorticator and fiber - cleaning and shortening system. The efficacy of traditional and enzymatic scouring methods and subsequent low temperature peroxide/persulphate bleaching were evaluated using a vertical wicking test and a modified Chibowski thin-layer wicking method. The latter (which involves the measurement of wicking rates of polar, semi-polar and non-polar solvents on &#8220 ; bare&#8221 ; and &#8220 ; pre-contacted&#8221 ; samples) permits, in principle, the calculation of changes in surface free energy of the treated samples. In practice, although the Chibowski method gave more useful wicking results for evaluation of different scouring methods, the calculated changes in gs were difficult to interpret because of the complex surface chemistry of the fiber blends.
