Sažetak
Based on the number and art historical importance of preserved stone fragments, Istrian peninsula stands as a prominent region in Croatia and Europe for the research of early medieval stone sculpture. The monuments created during the time of two great emperors – Justinian in the 6th and Charlemagne at the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 9th century – stand apart, having attracted most attention of researchers so far. Distinctively, sculptural fragments created in the course between those two significant periods, have remained on the margins of scholarly interest. This paper provides an analysis of selected fragments that, although generally inferior in craftsmanship in comparison to the sculpture of the major corpus, embody visual markers and materialized memory of a neglected part of Istria’s past. Moreover, these fragments stand as evidence of comprehensive production of stone sculpture even in times of crises and exhibit an important segment in the knowledge of the continuity and organization of the regional workshops’ activity.
