Sažetak
Background Certain drugs are classified as potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) for the elderly because they carry an increased risk of adverse drug events in this patient group. Purpose The aim of the study was to identify PIMs and relevant drug-drug interactions (DDI) using validated originally developed protocol 1. Methods One hundred and nine patients acutely and electively admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital Dubrava were included in the study. For each patient the prescribed therapy at hospital admission and discharge, comorbidities and basic lab reports were collected. Data on drugs were obtained by interviewing the patient and were retrieved from medical records and the patient’s family physician. PIMs and clinically important DDIs were defined in the originally developed protocol. Results Out of patients included in the study (gender M:65, F:44, age 73, 7 ± 6, 6 (range 65-92), number of medicines 7, 55±3(range 2-17), comorbidities 5, 75 ± 2, 6(range 2-12)), a total of 75 (68, 8 %) patients received 113 PIMs and 93 DDIs at hospital discharge. Sixty-six (60%) patients were taking PIMs, while 51 (46, 8%) patients were taking drugs with potentially serious DDIs. The most frequent PIMs or drugs involved in DDI included benzodiazepines, antihypertensive drugs, NSAIDs and anticoagulants. Conclusion By using the original protocol, a high prevalence of PIMs and clinically important drug-drug interactions was determined.
