Sažetak
Mental toughness and motivation are two very important factors for an athlete’s progress and success in sports. In 2021, the research was conducted in one big Croatian football club. The research aimed to examine the relationship between mental toughness and intrinsic motivation in young football players aged 12 to 18. Cricket Mental Toughness Inventory (CMTI, Gucciardi & Gordon, 2009) consisting of 5 subscales (affective intelligence, desire to achieve, resilience, attentional control, and self-belief) and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI, 22 item- version Task Evaluation Questionnaire) consisting of 4 subscales (interest/enjoyment, perceived competence, perceived choice, and pressure/tension) were applied in the football context. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between players’ mental toughness and intrinsic motivation, with mental toughness subscale resilience being positively correlated to all subscales of intrinsic motivation, except the subscale pressure/tension which was negatively correlated to all subscales of mental toughness. These results, as all other correlations between the subscales of the two analyzed concepts, are further discussed, as well as their pedagogical implications and the importance of coaches’ pedagogical work with young athletes that will encourage their mental toughness and motivation as pillars of sports progress and success.
