Sažetak
The thesis according to which one becomes a cyclist out of need, and stays one out of love, really has its origins in today's reality where congested roads and occupied parking spaces, with inadequate drawbacks of public urban and suburban transport noticeable especially during hot summer months - do not leave too much space for improvisation. Among other things, it is also the reason for the general tendency of increasing usage of bicycles in the developed European countries by the ecologically aware citizens of all profiles. Furthermore, in the underdeveloped and poor countries, the bicycle has long since been a necessity and almost the only transport means, whereas in the majority of the Croatian cities (except Koprivnica, Varazdin and Zagreb) the awareness of the practical side and benefits of using bicycles in urban traffic is in the developing phase. The obvious lack of tradition in using bicycles in our cities is primarily the result of a huge error made during the 1960s when urban and suburban road infrastructure was modernized and when the urban planners did not sufficiently or failed completely in considering the cycling paths and well-thought entire bicycle infrastructure (various traffic signalling, parking places, depots, drains, etc.). This practically means that the planners "forgot" and eliminated the bicycle as a inexpensive, efficient, and multiply useful transport means that can perform significant transport of the citizens. Therefore, today's concept and urban traffic policy measures have to re-establish the bicycle transport and to rank it adequately in the concrete traffic system in compliance with the existing development objectives and the social and economic needs.
