Sažetak
During the coronavirus pandemic, a mask became one of the most prominent symbols of safety and prevention, leading to the increased use of literal and figurative language with mask-related imagery. This paper analyses figurative expressions with the lexeme "mask" that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic and their meanings in the Croatian media discourse. The analyzed corpus is comprised of newspaper articles from digital editions of Jutarnji and Večernji list published from March 2020 to March 2021. The analysis focused on identifying and analyzing different types of figurative expressions, such as idioms, metonymies and metaphors that contained the word "mask" or its equivalents in the Croatian language. These figurative expressions were subsequently examined using cognitive linguistic approaches to explore the underlying conceptual mappings. Furthermore, the paper explores how these expressions were used to convey various messages and attitudes toward wearing masks during the pandemic, including promoting their importance for public health. This part is based on Critical discourse analysis and aims to uncover the underlying power relations and ideologies at play in the discourse surrounding mask-wearing during the pandemic. The paper aims to contribute to the broader understanding of how language reflects and shapes social perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors during times of crisis. It also highlights the importance of examining figurative language use in crises to better understand how it may impact public attitudes and behaviors around health issues.
