Sažetak
Living in multigenerational households can have both positive (e.g. stronger family bonds, sharing household responsibilities and child-care, economic benefits) and negative impact (e.g. family tensions, less privacy, need for mutual adjustments) on family dynamics and well-being of members. The aim of this research was to compare well-being of children and parents who share households with grandparents to those who live in nuclear families. This study is a part of a comprehensive longitudinal research of child well-being in Croatia. In this research, 881 families lived in nuclear family, 62 families lived with paternal grandparent(s), 57 lived with maternal grandparent(s) and 67 families lived with both maternal grandparent(s) and paternal grandparent(s). Parents and their child filled in questionnaires that was distributed in school. Children age ranged from 8 to 13 years, with mean age 10.6±1.17. We assessed well-being of parents and their child. Overall happiness and life satisfaction were assessed by questions „How happy are you“ and “How satisfied with your life?”. Additionally, we assessed satisfaction with various aspects of life (e.g. satisfaction with family, friends). No significant difference in well-being indicators was found between the children who shared households with grandparents and those who didn't. However, in parent sample, for both mothers and fathers levels of happiness and life satisfaction were lower if they shared household with their own or spouse's parent(s). There was no difference in subjective perception of family economic status or average income per family member, between those who shared household with grandparents and those who did not. These finding suggest that sharing household with grandparents does not affect children's well-being. However, mothers and fathers who live with their own parents or their spouse's parents show lover levels of well-being. The fact that this research was conducted in mostly well-off families with school aged children could mask positive impact of grandparents (e.g. taking care of a child, financially helping). Moreover, since the research was conducted during Covid-19 pandemic, sharing household with older persons that were especially vulnerable could put additional stress on family and decrease well-being.
