Sažetak
According to Edwin E. Gordon’s theory of learning music (1977), the period of a child’s life from birth to the age of nine is the developmental phase when the child’s musical abilities stabilize. Considering the importance of early identification and development of children' s inherent musical potential (Bačlija Sušić and Svalina, 2018) and general wellbeing of children, the aim of this pilot study was to assess the use of Primary Measures of Music Audition - PMMA (Gordon, 1979) as the only valid and reliable instrument in assessing children' s musical potential (aptitude). In the framework of the ethnographic research that is part of the ongoing research project, the instrument was adapted to Croatian and was used with convenience sample of children aged 5 to 6 (N = 37) in urban and rural preschool institution. Based on the results of initial measurement it was concluded that in assessment of children’s musical potential, it is necessary to use children’s age-appropriate non-formal monitoring tools that would be less stressful and more enjoyable for children (Bagnato, 2005 ; Grisham-Brown, 2008 ; Meisels et al., 2003 ; Neisworth and Bagnato, 2004). The results obtained represent a contribution to the quality of music education as a fundamental goal and principle of educational policy in Croatia (NKRPOO, 2015).
