Sažetak
Organic matter content is one of the main components that determine the ecological state of water bodies. Natural processes such as eutrophication are dependent on the organic matter quantity and quality. Recently, the study on organic matter composition in different ecosystems and its role in the food web gained attention. Microbial communities act as the foundation of the aquatic food web and a connection between simple organics and higher trophic levels. Microbial communities can produce, transform, and degrade organic matter while forming a network of interactions known as a microbial loop. Therefore, changes in the structure, thus in metabolic functionality of microbial communities, directly affect the ecology of the entire aquatic ecosystem. Furthermore, as the sensitivity and quick adaptations of microbes to newly formed environmental conditions enable researchers to use them for evaluations of ecological state, the microbial metabolic potential directly corresponds to ecosystem conditions. By involving meta’omics, current studies helped to deduce the abundant metabolic processes in various ecosystems, forming pools of high-throughput genomic data available via several databases. The data contained in these publically available databases can be used to curate a custom database of choice.
