Sažetak
Coppicing falled into neglect in the recent decades leaving gaps in knowledge on silvicultural interventions, especially their long term effects for coppices of South-East Europe. Thus, research aims to define the long term effects of thinning in sessile oak (Quercus petraea Mill.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) submountainous thermophilic low coppices in the Croatian Dinarides. Experiment includes two loclaities with thinning and control plots. Thinning was done in 2002 with 17.71% wood volume removed in European beech coppice and 26.09% in sessile oak coppice. Total of 1276 trees have been marked, measured (DBH, tree height, number of stems per stump) and assessed for vitality, origin and six silvicultural features (revealing tree quality). Descriptive statistics for all variables, RMANOVA for DBH and height and for continuous variables mean+-+ standard deviation for categorical frequency and relative frequency variables were done (STATISTICA, SAS9.4.). Results show statisticaly significant positive long term effect of thinning on tree growth and stem and crown features and supports findings that thinning is needed positive intervention into European beech and sessile oak low coppices increasing its growth and quality. Recent economic crisis, sudden increase of energy prices and increased demand for wood assortments already initiated higher interest into coppices in Croatia.
