Sažetak
Based on the insights from the ongoing multidisciplinary and multi-sited research project The European Irregularized Migration Regime at the Periphery of the EU: from Ethnography to keywords (ERIM), and some previous author's work, this presentation discusses restrictive and oftentimes violent bordering practices that intentionally irregularize migration throughout the (Western)Balkan route. It focuses on mechanisms of the border control and surveillance, ones that lead to securitization, militarization and irregularization of mobility as well as onto (in)direct societal impacts of these, namely on suffering of migrants, on the state-driven production of crimminalization of migration, and depletion of solidarity. These processes will be accentuated through critical analysis of documented pushback practices along the route focusing on Croatian, Slovenian and Serbian context. Secondly, I will also discuss on opposite dimension of this migration regime in parallel with the closure of the Balkan corridor, which relies on a humanitarian practice stemming from government-driven policy of admittance of refugees. Notwithstanding daily contested border practices aimed at deflecting of migrants, in the same time there are overtly state-controlled and promoted activities of selecting and transferring refugee families from camps in Turkey by resettlement, or relatively smooth reception of Ukrainian refugees recently. On the eve of Croatian joining the Schengen area I conclude with remarks that both migration governance practices confluent into intertwined bordering dynamics at the EU periphery, by further endangering lives of people on the move, limiting their potential protection status and integration prospects, boosting-off negative anti-migrant sentiments, and recreating known dichotomy of genuine vs false refugees.
