Sažetak
The art of warfare and fortification building also includes a less-studied area of the economy of war, i.e., the estimated/ideal domestic budget for a fortress. Christine de Pizan particularly elaborates on it in her "modern military prototreatise" Le „livre de faiz d'armes et de chevallerie”, written in 1410. Venetian by birth, Christine became a writer at the French court and was active both in the literary and political life of 15th-century France. Her popular book stands out within the body of theoretical work on warfare and military architecture not only for the gender of its author but also for its extensive treatment of budgetary issues, thus permitting a particular insight into Renaissance military theory. To discuss the circulation of military knowledge between France and the Republic of Venice and its overseas territories, Pizan's budget lists will be compared to fortress inventories found in the archives (lists of arms, soldiers, and other necessities) of the eastern coast of the Adriatic between the 15th and 17th centuries, such as those of Šibenik and Split. The incessant wars with the Ottomans caused frequent changes of borders and the urgent need to fortify them, which makes this comparison particularly efficient.
