Sažetak
When studying the Bronze Age in the area of northwestern Croatia, an increased number of sites in the Late Bronze Age can be noticed. The settlements in particular are less often located on river terraces and valleys, rather they are found on habitable hillsides. The presence of such sites is especially notable in the area of Žumberak, Medvednica, Ivanščica and Kalnik mountains and these sites are recognized as hilltop-type settlements (Karavanić 2009). In the Bronze Age, which is seen as an advance of “civilisation”, this settlement type represents a protected position, often located near a water source, with good access to timber and other natural resources, and overlooking possible communication routes. Fertile plains, easily defendable hills, proximity and accessibility of communication routes, water sources and similar essential resources were of particular importance for the development of prehistoric communities within a suitable landscape and communication networks. Favourable positions allowed these communities to turn more and more to new technologies and form new trade routes in the area of today's Slovenia and Hungary. The presence of similar or the same cultures, typological and technological features in the archaeological record indicate a strong connection and general indivisibility of these areas in the prehistoric period. The Late Bronze Age in Hungary as well as in most of Central Europe is marked by the presence of Urnfield culture. This culture is identified by the characteristic hilltop-type settlements and burial grounds with incineration funeral rites in the urns (Markovà and Ilon 2013: 830) as is the case in the area of northwestern Croatia. Similarly, in the area of eastern Slovenia, especially in the area bordering Croatia, there is also a large concentration of Late Bronze Age settlements and graveyards. However, the vast majority of settlements are mentioned in the literature as lowland settlements (Teržan i Črešnar 2014), but is that really the case? Very often sites are observed at the micro- regional level, and it is considered that individual settlements are incomparable due to the attributes that are added to them within their own context. This paper will discuss the attributes of settlements of the Late Bronze Age in northwestern Croatia in relation to eastern Slovenia and southwestern Hungary through a comparison of the terrain configuration and their position. Geographical features that are often interpreted in different ways due to the established theoretical basis of a certain area will be critically examined. The aim of this paper is to present the importance of a broader view and the use of different perspectives in order to enable a comprehensive interpretation of data at the interregional level. Such an approach would make it possible to compare artificially separated entities, which would provide a better understanding of the prehistoric socio-cultural environment.
