Sažetak
We appreciate the insightful comments made by Bockeria et al. on our recent article. We completely agree with the authors that placing histopathological changes into clinical context is important. The paucity of data correlating the magnitude of adverse cellular remodelling with clinical outcomes among patients undergoing atrial fibrillation (AF) surgery mirrors the logistical constraints of such endeavours. In our study, we investigated the impact of histological changes on echocardiographic descriptors of atrial conduit, reservoir and contractile functions. We found that both atrial apoptosis and fibrosis yielded significant declines across all facets of atrial function.
