Sažetak
Previous research indicated that interactions that people experienced in their families of origin have a significant impact on the mental health of the individual in both positive and negative ways, including even addiction. The current study sought to examine potential mediating role of emotion regulation processes on the relationship between family of origin dynamics and the current emotional health of individual. College participants (N = 90) completed an online survey consisting of a battery of questionnaires – Family of Origin Scale, Individual Problems/Strengths Scale and Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale. Results show that emotional regulation fully mediated the relationship between negative family environment and current personal negative affect, and between positive family environment and current personal positive affect. These results offer direction for potential interventions for better mental health among students through strengthening effective emotional regulation. We discuss the potential implications for therapists, limitations of our findings, and future research considerations.
