Sažetak
Although the complete integration of the western coast of the Apennine Peninsula into the Roman system occurred only after the Second Punic War, the intensified contacts between the Apennine communities and the Eastern shores of the Adriatic, specifically with Liburnia, goes back to the beginning of the third century BC. Early Roman Republican coinage, mostly type aes signatum and aes grave found in settlements (also monetary and premonetary forms, ramo secco bars, premonetary aes signatum etc.), correspond with the appearance of ceramics and suggest everyday use, trans- Adriatic exchange of goods and strong links between Liburnia and the northern Italian area. The large amount of finds from Diomedes’ sanctuary at Cape Ploča prove the active presence of seafarers in Liburnia from the end of the fourth to the beginning of the first century AD, while Lamboglia 2 type of amphorae seemingly indicate the increased Roman and Italic commercial activity since the mid-second century BC to the end of the Late Republican period. Yet despite clear indicators of trade and interaction the peculiarities of how these and other connections affected the Liburnian territory through time still remain problematic. Almost simultaneous numismatic finds from the same period in Liburnia include puzzling amounts of North-African coins suggesting a wider context of trade activities and Mediterranean connections with the Eastern Adriatic. Additionally, as difference to other regions of the Eastern Adriatic where such phenomenon occurs, despite material indicators there is a complete lack of literary confirmation for the existence of permanent Roman presence in Liburnia in the form of conventi c. Romanorum. All of this suggest a different process of “transformation of territory”, because of which this paper intends to re-examine existing theories by cross-referencing newer archaeological research with new literary analysis in order to provide a newer perspective on trade, contact, movements of people, intense Roman immigration and integration of Liburnian provincial communities into the Roman system until the beginning of the Principate.
