Sažetak
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) has gained popularity in recent years due to the possibility of production of complex forms that are unfeasible or uneconomical for production using conventional manufacturing processes. Although a considerable amount of research on process parameters and materials has been done over the last years, less attention was given to the problem of how to design products that will utilise the possibilities of metal AM. This paper presents the development of 15 design principles for the DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) process. The goal of developing of these principles is to help designers to conceptualise new products following prescribed steps of the design process. The knowledge contained in derived principles is embodied in 5 artifacts used as a design tool during the design process to show practical guidance on how to design parts to gain maximum benefit from what metal AM can offer. The initial validation of design principles, artifacts and design process is conducted through a case study that describes the use of these principles through the redesign of gear manufactured using the DMLS process.
