Sažetak
At the end of the 19th century the Yugoslav Academy of Arts and Sciences (today Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences) launched an ethnological project with the goal of collecting data on folklore and popular customs. Priests, school teachers and wealthy farmers, were encouraged to write down everything important for understanding the contemporary life of Croatian peasants at the turn of centuries. Among abundance of gathered material, many data referred to the popular praxis of divination, foreseeing and sorcery. Unquestionable plentitude of recorded information on broad magical praxis still needs to be thoroughly studied and summarized from various research aspects. Therefore in this paper I will focus on one manuscript from Istria (peninsula in Croatia) written by Stjepan Žiža, school teacher from Rovinjsko Selo (village in Istria) in 1896. The large part of Žiža’s work related to superstitions or supernatural elements among local people. But, in the vast multitude of his recordings, in part on divination, he minutely described the actions people undertook to provide lust, wealth and immortality. In this paper I will present Žiža’s recordings on divination and reason folks need for using entire set of magical practices to provide them material benefit.
