Sažetak
In this paper I would like to point to three concepts of sanctification that can be discern in the case of Vrčevo, a small hill in central Dalmatia. In 2008 the hill was sanctificated to Mother Mary by the local community which male members brought the statue of Mother Mary from Međugorje afoot. Since then the hill became the place of worship and pilgrimage and the community prospered in touristic/economic life. However concept of economic prosperity (which can partly be related to the one of Međugorje) is not the sole driver of the entire action. During the War for independence tCrčevo hill was important stronghold of Croatian army and in the relatively low landscape it was a hallmark of Croatian resistance. Therefore the statue of Mother Mary was also placed as a symbol of respect and tribute to veterans who defended and preserved Croatian national identity and Catholicism in the area. Finally I will argue that sanctification of Vrčevo was wittingly conducted to disintegrate and discontinue the local popular beliefs in witches. According to those beliefs Witches gathered on Vrčevo every night and nearby village of Raštani was identified as a place of witches. Therefore the local community decided to cease those beliefs and to turn this defect into the advantage. By placing the statue of Mother Mary on the top of Vrčevo local community showed that they are not superstitious but true Catholics and at the same time they turned they village from a place of fear and isolation to the place of pilgrimage and prosper.
