Sažetak
Yugoslavia included the format of art colonies and sculptural symposia to its cultural policy already in the mid-1950s. Initially conceived as an opportunity for close interaction between professional artists and local communities (usually small towns and villages), towards the end of the decade the notion of an art colony expanded towards the inclusion of annual gatherings of the worker’s art clubs, art amateur clubs, and informal naïve artist associations. While in the 1960s there were approximately 60-70 art colonies, according to the Federal Union of Artist’s Associations survey, in 1984 there were already 224 local and international art colonies, and sculptural symposia active in Yugoslavia at that time. An almost exponential rise in the number of such periodical events in the 1970s and 1980s points to changes in the legal framework of citizens' engagement with the production and dissemination of culture. Introduced after the implementation of The Low on Associated Labour, in 1976, they allowed for a decision-making autonomy of local communities on the scope and nature of their international cultural interactions, including the organization of international art colonies. Their contribution to Yugoslav cultural diplomacy, the types of exchange they assumed, archival documents describing the histories of the most prominent among these art gatherings (records of working methods, list of participants, catalogues of the exhibitions), memories on the participation of local communities in such events, and art collections they left behind – constitutive to the notion of heritage – are in the focus of this paper.
