Sažetak
The shrine of the Mother of God of Bistrica in Marija Bistrica located in the northwestern part of Croatia became the Croatian national shrine in 1971, at the same time as some of the most important historical moments in the making of what is today the state of Croatia took place. The decision to confirm it as national at that time and place was not coincidental. Based on anthropological analysis and interpretation, the paper discusses how the choice was based on the identity of the shrine which had been built upon its significance as an important pilgrimage site in this part of Europe during several last centuries. The discussion touches upon the historical events and symbolic representation of ethnicity, religion, economy, society, culture and other aspects which the shrine embedded in itself during time. Also, the roles of the shrine today and its connection to other Marian (and saint) shrines in Croatia and world are observed. With the goal of answering all these questions and through the methods of interviews, participant observation and archival analysis, the paper examines available sources from the shrine, including miracle books, testimonies of numerous pilgrims and other relevant historical data.
